A DEADBEAT’S GUIDE TO LIFE

I just got fired.

It was a corporate, cost-cutting decision. Nothing to do with me. Doesn’t matter. That’s not the point. I’m jobless. The question is, what do I do next?

The last time I got fired was two years and two weeks ago, on my 44th birthday. I knew then that I could not afford to linger. Depression is the albatross that’s always hanging in the air behind me. I made a plan then. I need one now.

So here it is.

  1. EXERCISE- I lost a lot of weight in ‘23/’24. I recently gained back about 10 lbs. I’ve been meaning to get back into the weight loss game. Now is the time.

  2. WRITE- I got a lot of writing done when I was out of work. That time off allowed me to finish a publish Earning My Ears. I also reworked a lot of short stories that ended up in Lies We Tell Ourselves, which I published a year later. Time to hit the coffeeshops. I need to get back in the habit of writing. Including—

  3. MAKE A MOVIE- Earlier this year, Jason Lanier and I were set to make a short horror film in Six Flags New Orleans. Unfortunately, circumstances changed and we were not able to make it. But since then, I’ve been mulling over the idea of making a short film. I know the movie I want to make. I have all the equipment necessary. I just need to finish the script.

  4. GET MY DRONE LICENSE- this is something that’s been in the back of my mind all year. Becoming a licensed drone pilot could come in handy when trying to get a job. Speaking of which—-

  5. SHOOT MORE- I need to start shooting more, both with my camera and my drone.

  6. ADVENTURE TIME- the timing isn’t great, but I think I need to go on a little adventure. For the last few months, I’ve felt a bit drained and stagnant. I think I need some adventure to spark my creativity. Even if it’s just a day trip flight somewhere.

That’s what I have so far. I don’t know what’s going to happen. All I can do is follow Walt Disney’s advice. “Keep Moving Forward.”
