One Hundred Grand
The Macro and the Micro aren’t always easily determined. Sometimes what is big and what is small is merely a matter of perspective.
Imagine yourself winning the lottery. One hundred million dollars. An enormous amount of money. Unfathomable, really, to the average person. It is a number so big that most people have no idea what they would do with it if they did have it. Now imagine a smaller amount.
One hundred grand.
In the greater scheme of things, this is not a lot of money. But for quite a lot of people, it is a life-changing sum. It is simultaneously nothing and everything, depending on your perspective.
A company called Huckberry is promoting what they are calling their “Dream Year Giveaway”. They’re giving out one hundred thousand dollars to one lucky person so they can live out their dreams for a year.
How you view it determines its impact.
Some poor fool might imagine himself buying a Mercedes Benz or some other luxury automobile. Some other hopeful imagines themselves getting out of debt and maybe putting a down-payment on a house.
I asked myself how might I look at the challenge?
What, within reason, do I want?
One of my biggest goals is to become a master of photography. It’s something I’m determined to accomplish within my lifetime. I think, if I had a giant sum of money at my disposal, I would get on a plane.
With only a backpack, a notebook and whatever I was wearing, I would begin an epic journey to becoming the kind of artist I want to be. I’d start in Tokyo, Japan. In the Shinjuku business district, I’d buy a camera and a 24mm lens. Then I would explore all that Tokyo and Japan at large have to offer.
After that? I don’t know. Maybe I would rent a motorcycle and explore South Korea. Perhaps I would learn to surf in Australia. Maybe I would take a photojournalistic eye towards Israel. It doesn’t matter really. It would be about the journey. And the discovery.
Money shouldn’t be a goal in and of itself. It is a necessity. But it can also be a tool. If I had money, I think that I would use it to live life to the fullest.
