The Human Side of War

There's a channel on Instagram called The Marvelous Mrs Fisher. I watched her reels occasionally because I thought she was kind of funny. Her humor lends towards rednecks and middle class American families. Her husband, who is part of the channel, seemed to be a farmer, or at least something outdoorsy.

Last week she posted a video asking for people to donate to a Palestinian family that was trying to evacuate from the warzone.

A lot of her fanbase revolted.

She made it clear that this was not about politics, but about helping a family in need. But the response she got was something to the effect of "So you support Hamas??". I don't know what percentage leaned in that direction. I didn't scroll through all of the comments, but it was enough that they made a second video telling people that if they don't like it, they should unfollow her.

Never a great response, in my opinion. And I assume people did.

You're allowed to feel strongly about Israel's war with Hamas. I do. But even in war... especially in war… we have to hold firm to our humanity. If a Palestinian family wants to get out of the war zone, shouldn't we be sympathetic to that?

Despite the disturbing Pro-Hamas trend we're seeing on college campuses lately, I would hope there were Palestinian families in the US who saw the war crimes committed on October 7th and said "This is evil."

It doesn't matter what side you stand on in a war. There will always be innocents in the line of fire. Ignoring them doesn't make us "the good guys", even if in the end we are the victors.

Should the Marvelous Mrs Fisher be punished for trying to help someone?
