Lanzrote

The last of the Canary Islands that we visited was Lanzrote, where we went to… yet another volcano.

This one was different though. Parque Nacional de Timanfaya was clearly more recently created. The landscape was fairly barren of vegetation. The roads were carved through volcanic rock. Those actually felt pretty dicey. The roads were very narrow and often had extremely steep drop offs. Being on a giant bus felt very poorly thought out.

In addition to a tour through the lava rock, we visited Restaurante el Diablo in Montanas del Fuego , which I think translates to The Devil Restaurant in the Fire Mountains. Which is maybe the coolest restaurant name of all time.

The restaurant uses the heat of the volcano to cook their food. They also gave a presentation about the volcano. They poured water into a volcanic vent, creating a geiser. They then showed us a larger vent and flames shot out from the ground. The ground itself was made up of volcanic rock that was warm to the touch despite how cold it was outside.

Unfortunately we didn’t eat there.
